Wow that just sounds insane the amount that's in that watch! That'd be a great companion for a landscape photographer, once I'm back doing it I may get one. Hopefully the carpal tunnel will have settled and I can wear watches again!

But with no GPS built in you would want a GPS module thingy in your camera? Or you could write down where you were I suppose.

Yeah could just get a GPS tracker unit that works out where you go, they're about the size of USB memory stick (can take off the case etc if weight is an issue, you know the type who cut tooth brushes in half, uncase their cameras and repack with lighter aluminium, file the knobs on tripods down to a little nub that's almost unusable in cold weather) they're very helpful if you don't have GPS as it just records the places you stayed for longest at particular times and if you make sure your time on the GPS and Camera are the same and use Adobe lightroom you can import the data to go into the meta information on your photos. Meaning no expensive GPS attachment for the camera that sucks the camera battery.

I'd also recommend if you're going into areas you don't know have an actual GPS and a paper map and compass and know how to use all of them.

People go that crazy to save weight? I guess they would, people I know used to run 3 disc brake rotor bolts instead of six to save six grams on their 17-18kg DH bikes, people get silly to chase numbers on forums.

Strava on a phone may work alright if you have a battery back for your phone.

Yeah I've seen all straps removed from backpacks but the ones that are for your arms, even waist and chest straps. Shortening them so that they don't blow around in the wind on top of a mountain is helpful, but to remove them all just ludicrous if you get into tough areas waist straps are very helpful!

Seen guy ropes removed from tents to cut down on weight so you don't need as many pegs, one guy I knew did this and then he got out of his tent in the middle of the night had a pee, turned around and the tent was gone. He ran around and saw it blowing off down the hill. Spent the rest of the night getting his gear from the surrounding rocks and few low lying plants. You have to know where to pitch a tent if you're not going to peg it out correctly!
