Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Vs Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.

I'm normally a landscape photographer, my entire kit is set up for landscapes, starting to put a few up on here:, but after a few accidents I've been playing around with things I can access easily and thinking Macro could be a lot of fun and wanted to know what people thought of the lenses:

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Vs Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.

I have mild cerebral palsy which gives me a shake and why I love landscape work as it lets me use a tripod and expose as long as I want, I like the idea of the f2.8 and the IS for hand held photography, but the length is just that bit shorter so I was curious has anyone tried both of these lenses and if so what did you think?

Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

High performance macro telephoto with excellent versatility.
With it's telephoto specification, life-size close-ups can be taken from further away without risk of disturbing the subject. Ideal for wildlife.

    • Canon L-series high performance macro
    • Telephoto focal length
    • Life size image reproduction (1:1)
    • 3 UD lens elements
    • 2 position distance limiter
    • Ring type USM AF motor
    • Supplied tripod collar

    Telephoto macro lens

The EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM is a telephoto macro lens which offers a maximum magnification of 1.0x. Life-size close-ups can be taken from further away, and at less risk of disturbing the subject (ideal for insects and other wildlife). The internal floating focusing system minimizes fluctuations in aberrations caused by changes in focusing distance. This ensures the lens is razor sharp from 1.0x to infinity.

    L-series quality

Incorporates Canonís highest standards of precision engineering and optical superiority. The L-series is Canonís flagship professional lens range, combining outstanding image definition and ultimate performance with all-weather construction to prevent dust and moisture ingress.

Ring USM auto focus with manual override

Canonís ring USM auto focus system employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations for fast, accurate and virtually silent operation. Full-time manual focus override, via a large ring that does not move during auto focus, allows photographers to fine-tune focusing instantly.

    Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast, while suppressing flare and ghosting by absorbing stray light that might be reflected off internal lens elements and image sensor.

The lens comes supplied with a lens hood and a soft case.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Macro lens with Image Stabilizer setting new standards for performance and features.
The EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM, part of Canonís prestigious L series, and first featuring an Image Stabilizer with angle and shift detection that is highly effective at close focusing distances.

    • Canon L-series high performance macro
    • 4 stop Hybrid IS
    • Life size image reproduction (1:1)
    • UD lens element
    • Water and dust resistant
    • Three position distance limiter
    • 9 blade circular aperture for beautiful bokeh
    • Ring type USM AF motor
    • Optional tripod collar

    L-series quality

The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

    Hybrid Image Stabilizer

The new Image Stabilizer designed specifically for inclusion in a macro lens. It is able to correct lens shift movement as well as the angular movement that most IS systems can correct. This provides 2-stops of correction during 1.0x magnification, increasing to 3-stops at 0.5x magnification and 4-stops during normal shooting.

Ultra low dispersion (UD) lens element ensures high image quality

A UD element within the lens design effectively removes chromatic aberration. This allows for excellent image quality with high resolution, high contrast and excellent colour reproduction.

    Focus limiter switch

To enhance the photographerís use of the lens, it is fitted with a 3 position focus limiter switch. With limits for close up subjects, distant subjects and all subjects, the user is able to increase the autofocus speed making quick shots a possibility.

Beautiful background blur with 9 blade circular aperture

A circular blade aperture helps to create attractive, even background bokeh when isolating subjects at wide apertures.

    Fast quiet autofocus

The ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drives extremely rapid autofocus with near-silent operation. Full time mechanical manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.3m.
