Does a grey import mean used? As it does for cars, or are we just talking colour?

No a grey import is a product that is bought in to the country by someone other than the national distributor/importer. Some times you can get a version made for different countries and in vary rare occurrences some product made for Chinese(usually) can be made at a lower quality with the same manufacturer number.
I doubt that would happen with phones but it does happen with some car audio and home speakers.

There are also dramas with watches, local repairers find the occasional watch that has a genuine case but non brand name movements, that's how people can sell watches dirt cheap as they sell a watch with a fake movement and sell the genuine movement for a second profit from one watch.

I hope that made some sense, it is almost bed time.

'Grey imports': hundreds of dollars to be saved

Ah ok, I wonder how'd you go about getting a chargeback done on a website that sent non-genuine goods? As if they were advertising it they technically weren't sending you the goods you paid for and have legal ground to request your money back and if they didn't get your bank to get the money back for you.

No it's still a genuine product but not originally destined for Oz, it is the same for Kogan, CityWide etc etc, basically any site that comes up with cheap prices on something like a myshopping or google shopping search will be a grey import.

It is getting very hard to tell if a seller is selling genuine Australian stock or not as a lot will say Australian warranty which can mean the product will be sent to an unauthorised repair centre as you would expect as the certified repairers usually won't touch a grey import.

I have blocked most of the grey import sellers from my google searches as they take up about the three first pages of search results.

Sorry I wasn't meaning the phone, I was meaning the reference to the watch example.

maybe we should start a section of shops to be wary of?

Ahh OK well it would be difficult as you normally wouldn't find out until the watch store has to replace a battery or the watch breaks and by then you'd imagine your period to claim would be gone.

That was I was so angry when the watch I bought from Grays Online came from an unauthorised seller and the barcodes had been removed, who knows? It may well have been fine.

If I am looking at a grey import I just type the store name in to google with review after it and you normally find some unhappy customers oh and some fake posts from sellers.

I recently made a small purchase on Ebay and the product was supposedly coming from Australia, a couple of days after I had paid for the item they asked if I had received it and offered to send another. I said it was fine and I was happy to wait for the original, why? I bet they would have said the one they sent was their last one in Oz and the next would have to come from HK, if my package comes from OS I know they are liars and I will be happy to give them negative feedback.
