Escape into THX®-Certified Surround Sound
Movie, music, and gaming enthusiasts can now step up to realistic THX® Select2 Plus™-certified surround sound for less money down with the new TX-NR616 Network A/V Receiver. Onkyo’s acclaimed WRAT amplifier with three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry delivers cinema-like power in the home. With Audyssey DSX® expansion, you can add extra Front Height channels for more enveloping surround sound, while 2EQ acoustic correction guarantees optimal performance in any room. Eight HDMI® inputs handle 3D content, HD audio, and video display upscaled to 4K with onboard Qdeo™ technology. The MHL/HDMI input lets you connect a smart phone for smooth 1080p playback on your TV. Wireless home networking, meanwhile, opens up an exciting world of internet radio and cloud-based music streaming. You can even enjoy your multi-format PC-based music collection over Wi-Fi with an optional USB adapter. Intuitive system control—including audio distribution in multiple rooms—is provided by Onkyo’s Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android phone, or press the Quick Set-Up button on the supplied remote for instant mid-program adjustments. Visual input selection with InstaPrevue™ technology rounds out what is an exceptionally refined and affordable THX receiver.
THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified
THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is three to four meters and the room volume is around 56 cubic meters. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR616 had to meet the world’s most demanding standards for home theater audio quality and performance, and play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion.
4K Video Upscaling and Processing via Qdeo™ Technology
The TX-NR616 offers full 4K (4096 x 2160) upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by high-quality Qdeo technology from Marvell. Qdeo is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible wide-screen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever.
Note: 4K video playback requires a 4K-compatible TV. HDMI pass-through of 4K content from source devices is not supported. 4K upscaling of analog video is only available at 480i.
Audyssey DSX® and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz for Three-Dimensional Surround Sound
The TX-NR616 incorporates surround-sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby to offer greater flexibility in the setup of your home theater. Audyssey DSX can expand 5.1-channel audio soundtracks to incorporate additional Front Height channels, while the Dolby system also adds two Height channels and stereo source expansion. A seven-channel set-up provides a more detailed, realistic, and three-dimensional soundtrack, with the extra channels carrying subtle directional and ambient effects.

RDS (Radio Data System)
Since 1987, this system has simplified the tuning of programming of an increasing number of radio frequencies. Incorporated into radio receivers, the system selects programs and displays them on the receiver’s alpha-numerical display. Also, a microprocessor enables the receiver to determine the transmitter frequency that gives the best quality reception.
Compatible with Windows 7
Onkyo devices sporting this logo have passed Microsoft’s stringent tests to guarantee compatibility with their latest operating system, Windows 7. This compatibility allows users to stream audio content from their PC to a network-capable device.
Onkyo's exclusive Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers.
WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A “closed ground-loop circuit” design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) for System Control*
For A/V receivers
Select Onkyo A/V receivers offer integrated system control with certain HDMI-compatible high-definition displays, DVD and hard-disk recorders, and Blu-ray Disc players. With one remote control, you can control certain functions, including Standby, Volume and Direct Change. These receivers can seamlessly integrate with other compatible playback components and displays.
For DVD players
RIHD also enables selected Onkyo players to easily integrate with compatible Onkyo A/V receivers and other compatible displays.
*Compatibility depends on respective model.
RI (Remote Interactive)
Onkyo’s RI system lets you operate multiple RI-compatible components through a single remote control. RI capability also gives you further functionality with Onkyo’s Remote Interactive Dock for the iPod, including System On/System Off, Auto Power On, Auto Selector (Direct Change) and Timer functions.
Made for iPod/iPhone
The “Made for iPod” and “Made for iPhone” logo on selected Onkyo products means they’ve been designed specifically to interface with these Apple devices via USB port, dock, or remote Universal Port. This mutual compatibility allows the user to control playback from the Apple devices using the Onkyo system remote controller. Users can also enjoy superior sound quality, as signals are transported in digital form—rather than analog—via the direct-digital connection on selected models.
Connecting to your home network using a standard LAN cable, Onkyo network A/V receivers and network hi-fi components offer music streaming, internet radio, and access to PC-based audio with outstanding sound quality. DLNA 1.5-certified network connectivity has the added benefit of making firmware updates simpler than ever. Wireless networking is enabled with an optional UWF-1 Wireless LAN Adapter.
HDMI™ (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)
Transporting high-definition (HD) video, 3D encoded HD video, and multi-channel HD audio, HDMI is the most desirable connection for home entertainment. Onkyo’s HDMI-enabled A/V components send and receive HD signals, connecting components such as Blu-ray Disc players, DVD players, media streamers, and gaming consoles to compatible HDTVs. Recent versions of HDMI also incorporate an ARC (Audio Return Channel) for sending audio from the TV tuner through the connected receiver, and for enabling the use of an overlaid high-definition GUI (Graphical User Interface) on Onkyo A/V receivers.
Consumer electronics manufacturers established the DLNA standard to enable entertainment devices connected to a home network to share their content with one another directly, without the need for a complex set-up procedure.
Marvell Qdeo™Video Chip
On selected Onkyo receivers/players, interlaced-to-progressive video conversion and scaling are performed by high-quality Qdeo technology from Marvell. Qdeo is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible wide-screen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever.
In addition to a Zone 2 line-out, selected Onkyo A/V receivers feature a Zone 3 line-out that allows an audio source to be distributed to a third room equipped with an amplifier and speakers. Users can play up to three audio sources across three zones simultaneously.
192 kHz/24-Bit DACs
192 kHz/24-bit DACs enable the best possible reproduction of standard and high-definition audio formats.

InstaPrevue technology makes switching HDMI inputs and choosing content much easier.
Selected Onkyo network components offer access to MP3tunes online music service. After creating an account, users can upload their own music to an MP3tunes cloud-based storage “locker” and access it using portable electronic devices or home audio components.
MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) is an interface protocol allowing the connection of compatible portable electronic devices such as smart phones to A/V receivers. The protocol transports uncompressed 1080p video stored on smart phone for display on HDTV, with up to 7.1-channels of surround sound. On selected Onkyo network receivers, smart phones can be connected via a designated front-panel MHL/HDMI port. While officially ‘connection agnostic’, MHL cables commonly feature an HDMI plug and Micro USB connector. Once linked to an Onkyo network receiver, the user can control their smart phone using the system remote. Smart phones are recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver.
Selected Onkyo network components offer access to Simfy online music service. After creating an Premium Plus account, users can stream music from Simfy directly to their Onkyo network component - without the need for a PC.
