It took some time for Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson to return to Middle Earth, but the wait was very much worth it. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey starts off by playing strongly to its links to the previous adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings trilogy, before setting off on an adventure of its own. The first of three films based on The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey isn't a fast film to get going, but it does spent quality time introducing its key characters. Most moviegoers are more than familiar with Sir Ian McKellen's Gandalf of course, but the collection of dwarves and Martin Freeman's take on Bilbo Baggins are all brought together, and the adventure ensues. It's a journey that's punctuated by terrifically orchestrated action sequences, a swirling score, and lavish production design.
Furthermore, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has one or two real standout moments contained within its running time, not least when we finally get reunited with Gollum. The sequence where Bilbo Baggins and Gollum come face to face is as good as anything Jackson put on screen in the Lord Of The Rings films. And while The Hobbit doesn't quite capture the magic of the earlier trilogy often enough, there's a lot here to enjoy, and plenty left to look forward to. It's beautifully, beautifully presented on disc, too. --Jon Foster

    Product Description

The first of three epic instalments in director Peter Jackson's blockbuster prequel to his Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Set in Middle-Earth 60 years before events in The Lord of the Rings, the story follows the adventures of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who, at the instigation of the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), suddenly finds himself co-opted into joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) to help reclaim the Dwarves' lost kingdom of the Lonely Mountain from the clutches of Smaug the dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). After setting out on their quest from the safety of Bag End, the band of travellers soon find themselves pitted against a range of strange and fearsome opponents, in addition to a small, slimy creature known simply as Gollum (Andy Serkis).

In a house there once lived a human.
Not a nasty smelly dirty house, but a pleasant little semi in Belfast.
In this house, an eight-year-old boy is being tucked in to bed by his father. The father asks if the boy would like to hear a story. The boy nods happily and the father opens a copy of 'The Hobbit'...
Years later, this arrived through my door and was in the DVD player before the postman was out the gate. Strange that the postie carried a staff and wore a tall blue (and slightly battered) hat...

Within five minutes of starting the DVD I was transported back to my bedroom 29 years ago, tears of nostalgia clouding my eyes. My dad was reading softly and the amazing story which shaped a large part of my life began once more...

Before seeing this film, I was aware that there has been a fair amount of criticism directed towards it due to the film makers turning a relatively short story into three rather long films. There have been suggestions of cashing in on the franchise. Well, that may be the case to a certain degree but I don't think you can fail to see that THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY remains a very entertaining film.

This part of the tale takes part 60 years before the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. At the very beginning, we see Bilbo Baggins as he begins to settle down to write the full story of the adventure that he found himself on when he was a young hobbit. We are then given enough back story in regards to the Dwarfs to know what became of their home and, ultimately, the reason for the adventure that bilbo later finds himself embroiled in. For me, this was really what made this installment as successful as it is. This is the prelude to LOTR and, cleverly, there are ways that we are reminded of this; the music plays a great part in this, as you instantly recognise elements of the soundtrack from the later films. Obviously, characters also play a great part in this too, but we are also given a new insight into some. As another reviewer has stated, our introduction here to Gollum really leaves an impact, especially his parting words. The Shire is also very familiar - Bilbo's house 60 years ago looks as it does later. And, there is even Frodo at the very beginning of the film, reminding you of the connection between him and Bilbo.

Of course, THE HOBBIT makes use of brilliant CGI and other effects. The sets are fantastic and the characters are great. Likewise, the casting of this film is also inspired. Richard Armitage as Thorin is perhaps the revelation but the whole cast is strong. I truly loved this film. Yes, it is long and yes, there are going to be two others before Bilbo is able to say that he went there and back again, but I for one am really looking forward to the next part of his journey.

Prompt delivery as i had pre-ordered it arrived just a day after it arrived in shops so this was impressive. Bought for teen son who is a great fan of the book and so the dvd was a late easter gift. Dvd worked well and was pre packed. The cost was about same as shops offered. Excellent quality. The film itself was enjoyable although we could'nt believe the producers had managed to squeeze this rather small book into 3 Dvd's. We look forward to the next one.

Once again, Peter Jackson's take on Tolkien's original does deviate from it slightly, but not detrimentally, and stays with the essence and spirit of the book.

There's a few continuity howlers that made me chuckle rather than be annoyed, and, like the LOTR films, this one is also still very enjoyable on subsequent viewings.

It met all my expectations, top notch Blu Ray. Seriously just buy it, the casing is absolutely fantastic, I hope they use the same style for the next 2 Films.
The only thing that could have been improved would be the artwork on the discs, it felt a little plain at first. But to be honest it has grown on me.
So really this steelbook is perfect.

Beautiful cover for an exceptional Blu-Ray. Whilst some people may not be bothered about collecting steel-book versions of films on Blu-Ray, the cover to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an incredible one and well worth purchasing. The film is a great buy in itself, with stunning visuals and an enjoyable film from start to finish.

A gentle and amusing start finds Bilbo suddenly volunteered to help Gandalf and the Dwarves on a long journey fighting off evil to restore the Dwarves to their homeland. The action intensifies throughout this beginning of the journey and Bilbo has to contend with antagonism from within the Dwarves as well as the discomfort of living and sleeping rough. It comes as a bit of a shock when suddenly all the action stops and you have to wait in anticipation of the next part of the story. Very well told, outstanding scenery, exceptional graphics and engaging soundtrack.

I bought this after having watched all of the Lord of the Rings, this is a great introduction to the rest of the trilogy. It keeps true to The Lord of the Rings and all the original characters. It isn't like Star Wars where the I-III were completely different to IV-VI. It looks like it was produced at the same time, uses the same actors for much of it. The only slight gripe I have is the ending, it ends a little strange, like as if there is supposed to be a follow on film - I hope this is the case as it is a strange ending if there is not another film in the making.
