I'm hoping a few friends of mine are watching the site, they may be interested in this, got a few friends that studied engineering and architecture at Newcastle Uni.
I learnt 3D modelling using 3D Studio Max (think they just call it 3ds Max now) and my friends that went into films progressed to Maya, not sure what they use these days, probably custom built software, spacial aware and rendering outfits.
I have no idea how to use any of it but damn it looks like fun, not really $5000 worth of fun though
it's not as hard as you may think, there's also decent free 3D software out there, check out Blender: blender.org - Home of the Blender project - Free and Open 3D creation software
I've not looked at it for a few years but it was good when I last saw it. Can do a lot this is 4 years ago and made with free software:
Audio obviously pulp fiction.
the swaying grass in this is impressive:
Yeah, they are pretty cool, is there anything similar for machinery or construction?
Best free CAD Style software, there's not a lot in the CAD that's good and free, but here goes:
Google SketchUp - Download
Lacks a lot of CAD features, and the free version is a bit light.
there's a free version of progeCAD, it's the 2009 version and you'd have to do a bit to get it working on anything other than XP or Vista:
progeCAD Smart :: ProgeCAD
pretty good option for those a bit more serious about CAD as this brings a lot of features that professional CAD packages use, worth creating a second boot with Vista or XP to run it if you're after free CAD software.
Sweet Home 3D
Sweet Home 3D - Draw floor plans and arrange furniture freely
probably a bit basic, but good for students or people thinking of going into architecture. can be used online and no need to download.
