What's the story? Awards & Reviews About the Deal The pity about this wine is that there wasn't much made of it.
The buying boys got a little dewy-eyed when they started talking about this wine. They reckon she’s “Explosive … pure, lithe and energetic with winsome charm and effortless balance.” JD got all verklempt about the “beautiful perfumed nose with floral notes of violets and white flowers.” There’s citrus and texture and racy acidity to boot, just as a classic Clare Rizzo should be.
Matchbox Wine Co. is an artisan wine label in the making, well on its way to becoming a cult hit. Insanely talented winemaker Nav Singh and his wife, wine and marketing expert Louise Radman, are the gentleman and lady of Matchbox. That puts them at the helm of a fresh, funky and very exciting new brand, sailing 'round the rolling vineyards of Clare and sourcing the best parcels of grapes to fashion into “Uber-cool wine for bon vivants et al.”
Like most winemakers, Nav and Louise are big Riesling lovers and with Matchbox they have crafted precisely the kind of wine they like to drink. This is a wine that punters, hipsters and connoisseurs alike are talking about quietly in the corners of classy drawing rooms. It’s that wine you’ll find on award winning wine lists in those funky bars people tweet about and you’ve been making plans to check out.
But for all its sleek elegance, this is no obscure, arcane wine. Rather it’s one you can relate to: beguiling, stimulating and charming. As Louise Radman put it, these are wines “Inspired by the gamesome gallantry of the quintessential gentleman. Wines of winning charm, sartorial elegance and heroic spirit.” A wine from the days where men were dashing, when winners shook hands instead of bumping chests and celebrating with frantic dance moves. Ah, for the days when a healthy moustache afforded a chap a distinct advantage with the ladies!
Designed to challenge conventions, throwing down the gauntlet to open minds and encourage us to try new styles, Nav and Louise have set the bar very high with their inaugural release. As if the wine itself weren’t enough, Matchbox has nailed the brief with regards to design. It is inspired by early matchbox artwork of the 20s and 30s when men played hard with pride, valour, and gallantry. In accord with the sportsmen it celebrates, this wine has gumption and confidently walks the talk. Actually, it struts, champion that it is. And like all true champions, it’s rare… and moving fast.

Food friendly? More like a passionate love affair. Textural and crisp this wine screams out for oysters. Who cares if it’s a Tuesday night, treat yourself! You’re worth it.
